The Slow Parts: The Before Photo She Never Took
for the version of her that didn’t think this one would stick either
She’s been standing at the counter for eleven minutes. She knows it’s eleven because she keeps checking the microwave clock like it’s going to tell her something the box hasn’t.
The box has her name on it. Printed, official, like the universe already signed off on this.
Her phone is right there. Face up. Charged to 74 percent, because of course she checked.
She is not taking a picture.
Not because she doesn’t want proof. Because she’s taken this picture before. Two Januaries ago, different program, same kitchen, same hopeful idiot standing in it, same certainty that this was the one. She deleted that photo in April. Two taps, fast, before it could ask her anything.
So no. Not tonight. Tonight she’d rather just do the thing and let it prove itself, or not, without a photo standing around later asking her why she was so sure.
She reads the instructions again even though she already has them memorized. Her hands are steady, which annoys her a little. She wanted this to feel like something. It feels like unwrapping a protein bar.
The needle goes in faster than she braces for. Ten seconds. She counts them like she’s daring the number to lie to her.
Then it’s done. Pen down on a paper towel. Phone still sitting there, unbothered, uninvolved, exactly as camera ready as it was six minutes ago.
She looks at it once.
She doesn’t pick it up.
She wipes the counter, throws the swab away, and goes to bed without the picture, still not sure if this is the start of something or just one more thing she’ll end up deleting in April.
If you’re reading this and you’re new here, I want you to know I built something for you.
I’ve been putting together a page called Start Here, because I kept hearing the same thing from women who found this space late. They didn’t know where to begin. They didn’t want to scroll back through 100’s of posts to catch up on the philosophy behind all of it.
So Start Here is exactly what it sounds like. A handful of conversations I’d want every woman to hear first, the ones that explain how I think about this whole messy stretch, the invisible phase, the all in fantasy, the crap zone, the waiting for permission you already have.
And right now, if you’re new here, your first month is free.
Not a seven day trial. A full month. Come sit with the daily podcast over your coffee. Read through the archive. Show up for the weekly check-ins. Let it become part of your routine before you decide if it’s something you want to keep.
You don’t need to have believed in this from day one to belong here. You don’t need certainty, and you don’t need a before photo. You just need to still be showing up.

she kept going.
