Monday Focus: You Don't Have to Love the Walking Pad to Use It

Last Wednesday I told you the truth about the walking pad, which was that I did great with it for exactly one day and then spent the rest of the week walking past it like it was furniture someone else bought. I don't think it was a motivation problem as much as a "too many focuses" problem, because I gave myself two things to work on last week, and when the calories were going well, the steps quietly got pushed to tomorrow, and tomorrow kept being tomorrow.

So this week I'm doing it differently. My one focus is five minutes on the walking pad, every single day. Not an hour, and not a step count I'm going to feel bad about by Thursday. Just five minutes a day.

One focus you actually do beats three focuses you think about.

Why one focus is enough

I think we underestimate how much mental space it takes to try to be good at everything at once. When you're tracking food, drinking your water, getting your protein in, remembering your shot, working, and taking care of everybody else, adding three new goals on a Monday is basically signing up to feel behind by Wednesday. One focus gives your brain one job, and when that one thing goes well, the rest of the week usually follows it a little.

And this is not a quiet week for me. Students are back today and the new quarter starts, and between extra volleyball practice, soccer, two birthdays, and Trunk or Treat on Saturday, I already know how the story ends if I give myself a big goal this week.

Why five minutes

Here's what I figured out last week. I don't skip the walking pad because walking is hard. I skip it because getting started feels like a whole event, like I need the right time, the right shoes, and a free half hour that I don't actually have. Five minutes is small enough that I can't argue my way out of it, even on the busiest day this week. If I stay on longer, great, but five minutes still counts as done.

Something I'm building for us

Okay, I have to tell you about this because I'm a little obsessed. I'm building the Picky Girl GLP-1 Hub, which is the planner side of everything. It works right alongside Picky Girl HQ, so it knows things like my shot days, what's going on in my week, and my Monday focus, and it keeps that focus in front of me instead of letting it disappear by Tuesday like it did last week.

And it makes printables. This is my actual week. My Monday focus is right at the top, my shot days are marked, my HQ dinners are already filled in, and every day has a little spot to check off protein, steps, sleep, and my focus.

Then each day gets its own page, with room for my top three, my trackers, what I'm eating from HQ, my wins, and a brain dump, because some days I just need somewhere to put it all.

It's coming soon, and I'll tell you more as soon as I can. I just couldn't keep it to myself any longer.

Inside this thread

  • How I'm fitting five minutes into a packed week, honestly, including the days I already know will be hard.

  • The October step challenge home stretch, because we have 13 days left and I want us to finish strong.

  • Your one focus for this week, with a copy and paste line so you can drop yours in the comments in ten seconds.
