On Monday I picked the simplest focus I've ever picked, which was to check in every single day this week, even when the day isn't pretty. So far I have, every day. But somewhere between Monday morning and today, a second focus quietly showed up and took over, and it's the walking pad.

If you've been here since October, you know the walking pad and I have a history. There was the week I walked past it like it was furniture somebody else bought, and then the week I made my whole focus just five minutes a day. This week I walked about 9,000 steps on Monday, and on Tuesday I was on the walking pad again in the evening, on track to get above 10,000.

The walk I don't even notice

Here's what changed. I have my desk set up on the walking pad now, so I'm working while I walk, and I'm going 1.5, which is very, very slow. I'm not sweating, I'm not watching the clock, and half the time I honestly don't even notice I'm walking. I just look down at some point and the steps are there.

The walk you don't even notice is the one you actually keep doing.

I think a lot of us picture movement as something that has to feel like a workout to count, and so when we don't have the time or energy for a workout, we don't do anything at all. A slow walk while you're already doing something else still counts as movement, and it might be the version you actually stick with.

This week on the walking pad: Monday 9,000 steps, Tuesday on track for about 10K, speed 1.5 while working. Goal: 10K as my normal.

Inside this thread

  • From five minutes to 9,000. The desk setup, the speed, and why this time feels so different.

  • Why I want 10K to be my normal, not a big day I brag about.

  • 187.2 and my period, and what I'm expecting from the scale the next couple of days.

  • If HQ hasn't clicked for you yet, plus your focuses from Monday and your Day 4 check in.

Free subscribers: today is Day 4 of No Ghosting November, which means the challenge chat just went back to paid members only. If you want to stay in it for the rest of the month, the yearly membership is $49, which works out to about $4.08 a month, and it comes with Picky Girl HQ, the Hub, the challenge, and every post all year long.

Why join Girl Code Daily?

Nobody in here is checking your step count. We're just checking that you're still here.

This check in is one of the posts members get almost every day, and this month every one of those days comes with a check-in in the challenge chat, whether your day was 10,000 steps or "I'm here, that's all I've got." Here are a few posts that fit this week, including one from October that I'm a little proud to look back on:
